Mission

Trail running exists because of the wild places we run through, yet the industry isn’t doing enough to protect them. Instead of focusing on what makes the trail possible, ecosystems, wildlife, and the natural world, it’s become a sport built on consumption of the things that are destroying the environment, greenwashing and virtue signalling.

For The Trail exists to change that. It’s an environmental movement built around actionable projects and community-driven resources that demand less of the natural world and make trail running more accessible for all.

We will do this through actionable projects for the trail.

Trail running is a sport and hobby based on nature, and trail running has forgotten that.

The photograph above shows a biodesert and a landscape devoid of any natural habitats or actual wildlife, this needs to change.

The site is divided into three paths that make up the trail running industry; Runners, Brands, and Events, each with its own projects, tools, and actions to create real change for the trail. From learning how nature works to tackling the issues threatening it, every project leads to something tangible.

The second part of the site is the categorisation of the projects, from biodversity, environment, climate, gear, etc

Each project will be for the runners, brands or events, or a combination of these entities and hit one of the categories above.

Projects like Project #1: DirtBags, our first project launch which we created ourselves to tackle the issue of single-use plastic in trail running. They are a reusable, home-compostable zip bags that replaces single-use gels and plastic zip bags, show what’s possible when we prioritise durability, reusability, and reduction whilst still getting convenience of single-servings.

At For The Trail, we believe real change starts with understanding. That’s why this isn’t just another sustainability project, it’s an environmental one. We want to shift the conversation back to nature itself. First, we learn about the ecosystems, the wildlife, the land, and how everything connects. Then, we uncover the real issues facing the trails.

We take action, creating tangible solutions that reduce harm, make trail running more accessible, instead of hiding behind greenwashing and virtue signalling.

This means rethinking how we interact with the trails, from the gear we use to the food we fuel with and the way events operate. It means questioning the industry’s silence and pushing for real change. And it means creating products that actually reduce impact—like DirtBags.

Without the trail, without wilderness, without nature, what is trail running? If we care about this sport, we need to care about the land beneath our feet. Let’s bring the focus back to the trail and fight for the places that make it possible.

Runners

We look at everything a trail runner can do that asks less of the environment and natural world.

If we care about the sport, we must care for the environment and land beneath our feet.

Join the CIRCLE This is our community space where we share knowledge, learn about nature, and collaborate on the projects that make a difference.

Brands

We look at everything trail running brands can do that asks less of the environment and natural world.

Events

We look at everything trail running events can do that asks less of the environment and natural world.
